Box Score Waterville, ME - The Colby College Mules (6-1-1, 3-1-0) defeated the Tufts University Jumbos (4-3-1, 2-3-0) by a score of 6-4 in their Friday evening matchup. The Mules were led to victory by
Jayden Grier, who's hat trick was the first of Colby's 2024-2025 campaign.
The first period started off hot for the Mules. Passes from
Tyler Crist and
Massimo Gentile led to a
Wyatt Schmidek goal just over a minute into the contest. Just two minutes later, the Jumbos scored to make the contest even at 1-1. At the 13:42 mark, Tufts scored again, increasing their lead to 2-1. Grier evened the game just a minute later, scoring off of an assist from
Nick Stapleton. The first period was clean for both teams, as the penalty box remained empty for the first third of Friday's matchup.
The teams were tied with two goals apiece at the start of the second frame. Crist scored from a Gentile assist at the 6:16 mark to give the Mules a 3-2 lead. The Jumbos fought back again, scoring at the 12:35 mark in the second period. The period ended with a score of 3-3, and one player on each team received a two-minute minor during the period.
The Mules turned on the afterburners in the third period as Grier scored with 6:07 elapsed. Stapleton assisted Grier on the play. At the 9:45 mark, the Jumbos were assessed a two-minute minor for slashing. With the man-up advantage, Grier was able to complete his hat trick via assists from
Reese Farrell and
Donovan O'Neil. Tufts was able to fight back to a 5-4 difference, but
Jake MacDonald sealed the game with an empty net goal late in the period.
Cooper Rautenstrauch saved 22 shots, while Colby held a 34-26 advantage on shots taken.
The Mules will continue their home stand when they take on the Connecticut College Camels on Saturday, December 7 at 3:00 PM.
