Waterville, Maine - To open up the new year the Colby College Women's Basketball team took down Welseyan University in their first NESCAC game of the season with a 69-53 final score. The win improves the Mules record to 9-4 overall and a 1-0 conference start while the Cardinals drop to 7-4 on the season and 0-1 conference start.
Colby was able to get off to a eight point 20-12 lead at the end of the first quarter highlighted by
Kate Olenik and
Lauren Cho netting six points a piece. The Mules continued to build onto their lead and dominated the second quarter offensively and defensively scoring 17 points over Wesleyan's six for a big 19 point halftime advantage. The Cardinals tried to make a comeback in the second half but Colby's lead was too big as the Mules stayed ahead throughout with the closest score still having Colby up seven. In the end, the Mules commanded the paint scoring 52 versus Wesleyan's 28 as well as bench points with 15 over the Cardinal's five. Throughout the whole contest the only lead Colby allowed the Cardinals to have was the 5-0 start in the first minute of the game.
Kate Olenik played well securing a double double with 19 points and grabbing 10 boards. Other double digit scorers for the Mules include
Adaobi Nebuwa with 12 points and six rebounds,
Lydia Mordarski with 11 points along with four steals and
Lauren Cho contributing 10 points.
Amelia Hanscom was great on the boards totaling 10 rebounds with three being offensive.
Next up, Colby Women's Basketball will head on the road for another conference matchup to face Williams College Friday January 12th in Williamstown, Mass.
