Men's Soccer to Open Season Tuesday at Thomas

Waterville, Maine – The Colby College Men's Soccer team is set to kick off the 2023 season Tuesday evening against the Terriers of Thomas College for the annual Elm City Bowl.  Colby won the opener against Thomas last season 2-0 and owns the series with wins in five of the last six matchups.

Looking to build off a 4-4-7 2022 season that saw the Mules lead the NESCAC in conference ties (five), five seniors return to lead Colby on the pitch after graduating 12 players from last year's unit.  Mario Simoes '25 ranked second on Colby's team a year ago with four goals and one assist.  Junior goalkeeper Brendan McCarthy appeared in 10 games for the Mules last season, producing two shutouts while recording 37 saves across the year.  McCarthy will be the lone captain of the team this year.

As the opener quickly approaches, head coach Ewan Seabrook has a lot to look forward to.  "We have a lot of talented players showing their work in the offseason is ready to pay off," said Seabrook.  "We have four center backs showing everyone what defending at the college level is all about.  It will be tough to choose two of the four, but what is certain is that we'll need all four center backs to be ready to compete and contribute.  Up front, Mario is always looking to get a goal when he is out there, and Edu (Casanova) showed glimpses last year before injury, and I simply cannot wait to see what He will offer this year.  Additionally, several first-year players have made positive impressions so far.  I am extremely excited for this entire class."

Starting his tenth year at the helm of the Men's Soccer team, Seabrook led the Mules to a NESCAC Championship title and NCAA Tournament bid in 2018.
"Talent only gets you so far," continued Seabrook.  We will need to play for each other, cover for each other, knowing that the NESCAC is an unforgiving league.  We're taking it one day at a time, but I believe in this group of young men."

Kickoff on Tuesday is slated for 7:30pm across town at Smith Stadium on the campus of Thomas College.  Check the schedule tab to catch the Mules when they come to a location near you.
