Waterville, Maine - In their second-to-last home game of the season, Colby Men's Soccer (4-4-4) opened the scoring but ultimately fell to Amherst (5-3-3), 3-1. The Mules fought hard against a strong Mammoths team that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last year.
Colby created chances early, registering four shots in the first 20 minutes and eventually earning a penalty kick. Jude Gussen stepped up to the spot but was denied as the keeper dove well to his right. Santi Canencio Moreno capitalized on the deflection to give the Mules a 1-0 lead. Colby would concede two goals later in the half off a corner and a cross, but goalkeeper Jackson Magee made three crucial saves to keep the Mules down by only a goal.
In the second half, both teams battled in the midfield and found it difficult to create in the final third. Colby had two shots in the last 45, with Canencio Moreno putting one high and Ethan Soroca forcing a save late in the half. Amherst scored their third goal around the 70th minute, even though defensively, Colby limited their opponents to 3 fewer shots than in the first half.
The Mules are back in action tomorrow, as they travel to Brunswick, Maine, to take on in-state rivals Bowdoin.
