Men's Tennis Overcomes #15 Amherst for Huge Win to Start 2023

Amherst, MA - Colby Men's Tennis took down 15th ranked Amherst on Sunday, to redefine one of the biggest wins in the history of the program.

Colby came out firing on all fronts in the doubles, with the 2nd team of sophomore James Bogdanovic and junior Sam Henry taking out Amhert's Zachary Ostrow and Micah Elias 8-4. On court 3, junior Captain Joey Barrett and freshman Aidan Kwong defeated Sid Jangbahadur and Marshall Leung 8-4. The Mules found themselves up 2-1 heading into singles after senior captain Jan Wenger and sophomore Jake Cohen lost 8-2 on line 1.

Amherst leveled the match at 2-2 when freshman George Chaidemenos overcame Kwong 6-2, 6-0 at 6th singles.

The mules responded immediately, with a commanding win from senior Ben Powis over Amherst sophomore Sujit Chepuri 6-2, 6-4 on court 4. Moments later, Barrett put the Mules a point away victory after he overcame Amhert's top player Edred Opie 7-6(5), 6-2.

After hours battling at line 5, Henry was edged by Amhert's Jangbahadur, by a score of 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(4) to make the match score 4-3.

It came down to Wenger and Cohen on courts 3 and 2 respectively. Yet again, the senior from Switzerland was able to pull the Mules across the finish line, conquering Leung from Amherst in an extremely close contest 7-6(5), 6-4. The Mules clinched the match at 5-3, but the work was not done.

Cohen overcame a 4-1 deficit in the 2nd set, and with support from teammates was able to defeat Amherst freshman Jakob Esterowitz 6-4, 6-4 on line 2 to cement a convincing 6-3 win for the Mules.

Colby is off to a historic start to the season and will continue their spring campaign against Brandeis on Sunday, March 12th.
