Mules Stunned by Bates in Overtime

Lewiston, Maine - Anything can happen in rivalry games. The famous 'Kick 6' in the Iron Bowl when Auburn upset Alabama shows that anything can happen in showtime. Tonight Colby lost to a Bates team who had one win heading into tonight's game and who lost by almost 20 to a Bowdoin team that the Mules beat. But a new day brought a new team as the Bobcats held down their fort with a 99-92 overtime win. This loss takes Colby to 6-5 on the season while Bates rises to 2-8.

The first half was all Colby, coming out strong and leading the whole of the 20 minutes. Lucas Green had an electric first half, shooting 3 for 5 from beyond the arc en route to 11 points. The Mules shot the ball well, making over 53% of their attempted three pointers. Marcos Montiel came off the bench with seven points and three rebounds giving Colby a 12 point lead right before the break. In the end the Mules were up 44-34 heading into half.

But Bates didn't let Colby have their lead for long, taking the lead with 13 minutes to play. Both teams went back and forth the remainder of the game but neither could pull away. Max Poulton had an interesting half, scoring 13 points but with 9 of them coming from the free throw line. Additionally, he didn't miss a free throw, going 9 for 9 from the line while the rest of the team went 17 for 18. Freshman Matthew Lamy came off the bench for Colby, scoring 11 of his career high 22 points in the second half. Lamy shot 3 for 3 from beyond the arc and, similar to Poulton, made 11 of 11 free throws the whole game. Lamy missed two shots the whole game while also having two steals on the night and leading the scoring for Colby. In the end a three point lead in the final 30 seconds was canceled out after a layup and free throw tied the game up to send it to overtime tied at 86.

In overtime it was all Bates. They exploded for thirteen points while the Mules only had six. It was a rough way to end the game for Colby but will make for a riveting reverse matchup when Bates travels to Waterville in the next calendar year. Poulton ended the game with 21 while Green and Jack Lawson had 16 and 15 points respectively. Lawson also had 10 rebounds giving yet another double double this season.

Colby is in action again in 2024 when they host Maine Maritime Academy in their last non-conference game before NESCAC conference play begins.
