Waterville, Maine - Following almost a whole month break from their last competition, the Colby Men's Basketball team hosted Maine Maritime Academy for their first game and victory of the new year. The win improves the Mules record to 7-5 on the season while the Mariners drop to an even 5-5 record.
The game remained close throughout the first half with the biggest lead being just eight points. However, the Mules were able to stay in front for most of the opening half including a three pointer from
Jack Lawson in the final minute to give Colby a 5-point halftime edge. The Mules came out hot from beyond the arc to start the second half going 3/3 in the first three minutes but MMA stayed close behind. Around the nine minute mark Colby started to pull away by knocking down more threes and playing some tough defense leading to multiple steals. The Mules then found themselves up 17 points with three minutes to go after a massive 21 to eight point run as Colby cruised in for the 88-74 final score.
Lucas Green led the way dropping 20 points (season-high) with
Jack Lawson right behind netting 19.
Max Poulton also scored in the double digits contributing 15 points and five steals while
Liam O'Connell finished with 11 points. A key impact on the final result was the Mules ability to score 17 second chance points compared to the Mainers three.
Colby Men's Basketball will be back in action January 5th at 7pm for their first conference game of the season taking on a strong #8 Trinity College squad in Hartford.
