Waterville, Maine - Everything looked slightly different this afternoon compared to the night before. It wasn't their blue away uniforms or who they were playing, but more how they played. Colby seemed less nervous, having gotten that out in their first game, as today they played more methodically and aimed to control the game. In the end the Mules cruised to a 89-78 win against non-conference opponents Gordon, leading the whole game. Although it's arguable that Gordon didn't play to the standards of Emerson, Colby always seemed a step ahead and didn't play down to their opponents.
Colby went up 16-3 right out the gates and didn't look back, not letting Gordon get within 5 points the whole half.
Ben Kaczmarek had an electric first half, converting three of his attempted five three pointers while shooting 66% total from the field to register 11 points. On the defensive end, freshman guard
Marcos Montiel grabbed seven rebounds, one of those being an offensive rebound to then find Kaczmarek for his second three pointer of the half. The Mules led going into the break, 45-38.
Montiel kept his momentum up coming out of half, knocking down a three pointer as
Jack Lawson found him open on the wing. Colby kept their run going through
Max Poulton who converted two consecutive jumpers from in and beyond the arc. Having another big game was senior guard
Liam O'Connell who tallied seven points in the half, rising above outstretched defenders to bury two from deep to go on a five point run. The senior, along with Lawson, led the team with assists in the game with four to match his 15 points. Colby had a double double for their second game in a row as Kaczmarek posted 18 points and 10 rebounds, leading the team in scoring with Montiel. In the end the Mules outlasted the Scots even with a thoroughly rotated squad as everyone got playing time. Freshman
Matthew Lamy got his first minutes today, even scoring his first basket as he got to the paint for a long layup.
With the energy that Colby brought to their first game and the poise shown in the second, the Mules are looking dangerous this season and are sure ones to watch. Colby is back in action again Friday, November 17th as they travel down to North Dartmouth, Massachusets to take on the University of Saint Joseph at 5:00pm.
