Gorham, MAINE - On Tuesday, April 26th, the Colby Mules took to the road. Their matchup was the University of Southern Maine, who they had lost to in five innings previously. This game would not be nearly as quick, ending in a 2-1 Colby loss after 18 innings. Both teams scored fairly early, with the Mules first run coming in the top of the fifth and UMaine's just a half inning earlier in the bottom of the fourth. No one scored another run until the bottom of the 18th, when UMaine won on an RBI walkoff double.
Ethan Hillenberg was charged with the loss, pitching a third of an inning in the 18th and allowing 1 run on two hits.
Elijah Cohen,
Howell Eglin, and
Ben Croteau all pitched three innings and gave up zero runs. The rest of the time on the mound was filled by
Adam Hoechstetter, Moses Celaya,
Ryan Grecco,
Matthew Scibilio, and
Jack Pletter. Together, these pitchers allowed only 9 hits and two runs in 18 innings against a team who previously put up 14 runs in five innings against Colby. Despite the tough loss, the pitching staff's ability to limit runs and hits in this game is a great sign of the growth of the team throughout the season.
It was
Brady O'Brien who was responsible for the Mules one run early in the game. He launched a solo home run in the top of the fifth to the game 1-1. O'Brien also had a single in the game. He tied for the team lead in hits with
Charlie Furlong,
Cole Palmeri, and Greg LeClair who all had two hits.
Patrick McConnell,
Clint Flippo,
Drew Miller,
Noah Reichman, and
Matthew Panker finished out the rest of the team's 13 hits with one each of their own.
The Mules play next on Saturday, April 30th, at 11:00 AM. There, they will host Trinity College for a doubleheader and then they will play them again Sunday, May 1st, at 12:00 PM.
