Waterville, Maine - The Mules welcomed the Polar Bears for a midweek game in the pouring rain on Wednesday night. The Mules came into this week ranked 4th in the nation for Division III and challenged Bowdoin in their first CBB (Colby, Bates, Bowdoin) game this season. Bowdoin came into the game 8-4 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
With the pouring rain at the start of the game, the women were dealing with an environmental factor they had not yet faced. Bowdoin started off strong, scoring two unanswered goals in the first quarter and finishing the half up 5-3. It wasn't until the third quarter when Bowdoin player Annabelle Gersch received a yellow card. The Mules scored three goals in less than two minutes to bring the score to a tie at six a piece. At 5:29 left in the third quarter the Mules went up on the Polar Bears and didn't look back. Colby scored seven goals in the third quarter, asserting their dominance on attack and held their opponent to just two goals in the second half.
The Mules scored a total of 15 goals, 12 of which were in the second half.
Julia Jardina and
Gianna Bruno were leading scorers on the team with four and three points a piece. Other contributors included
Annie Eddy,
Grace Toner,
Ainsley Dion, and
Elizabeth Hennessey. On defense,
Sarah Stark led the team in ground balls and caused turnovers with five and two, respectively. Colby was more successful on Wednesday on the draw, beating Bowdoin 16-10 and midfileder
Eliza Dean had six possessions for her team while Jardina and Stark had four apiece.
The Mules return to play the Middlebury Panthers on Saturday April 16th at 12:00pm and will finish the season at Trinity on April 23rd and at Bates on April 27th. The Mules are poised at second in the NESCAC and will look to go deep into conference and national playoffs.
