Waterville, Maine - The Colby Softball team played against Tufts University in a two-game set Friday evening. The Mules came into the doubleheader having not won a game against the Tufts program since the 2006 season, and looked to turn the tide. Splitting the doubleheader, winning game one 3-0 while Tufts took the second 7-2 win, the Mules picked up a huge game in the NESCAC East standings against one of the annual powers in all of New England.
Â
Colby jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.Â
Amanda Cabral and
Chloe Wilcox both singled to set up runners in scoring position for
Jackie Hill. Hill pushed both Mules across the plate when she reached base on an error, delivering a lead Colby would never relinquish. Â
Abby Orso held the Jumbos in check with 7.0 innings pitched, only allowing one hit and striking out eleven. The Mules added an insurance run in the sixth, executing a double steal of second and home, with
Hannah Masterson crossing the dish to make the score 3-0. Holding the Jumbos scoreless delivered Colby their first shutout against Tufts since the NESCAC started conference play in 2001.
Â
Junior
Sam Ahlholm started for the Mules in game two, going the distance and striking out five while only walking one. Senior
Laura Powell singled in the third and scored off a double by
Chloe Wilcox. Powell would score again in the fifth on a sacrifice by
Logan Luebbe.  Hill and Wilcox paced the Mules with two hits apiece. Â

Colby gets one more go at the Jumbos tomorrow morning at 11 at the Softball Complex on the campus of Colby College.
