Sparks, Md. - Days after taking down undefeated Hamilton College in the final seconds, the Colby College Women's Lacrosse team had another unbeaten team on the docket. This test came in the form of the #1 Salisbury Sea Gulls, a perennial power, and the nation's clear top-ranked team sporting a 9-0 record. The Mules stepped up to the test, and defeated Salisbury 14-13 in overtime.
The Sea Gulls jumped out to an early two-goal lead, but Colby answered right back with five unanswered goals to close out the first quarter.
Gianna Bruno and
Elizabeth Hennessey scored two apiece, and All Franz netted her sixth of the season to put Colby in front 5-2. The Mules were able to score three more times in the second quarter behind two goals by
Annie Eddy and one more by Franz, but five goals by Salisbury tightened the gap to 8-7 at the half.
The Mules took control of the third quarter, outscoring Salisbury five to one in the period. Bruno and Eddy each connected for their third score of the match, and the third goal of the afternoon by Franz with one second remaining in the quarter built Colby's lead to 13-8 entering the final quarter. Salisbury had only played in two close contests to this point in the season, but the 2021 Division III National Champions never gave up. The Sea Gulls scored five fourth quarter goals without allowing any at the other end of the field, sending both opponents to overtime for their first time this season.
In the extra frame, Salisbury unleashed two shots on goal, both turned away by Colby goaltender
Emily Podgorni. With 20 seconds remaining,
Annie Eddy netted her fourth goal of the contest, delivering Colby the massive upset and its fifth victory in a row. Podgorni had 12 saves in total, and Eddy was the leading scorer with four goals and two assists.
The Mules are back in action Saturday April 2 when they host Conn. College at 12:00pm.
