Women’s Tennis Finishes Fall Season at NEWITT Tournament

Waterville, Maine- The Colby Women's Tennis team concluded their fall season this past weekend at the NEWITT tournament hosted by Smith College. The competition was Fed Cup style, with singles and doubles in teams of 2 across three draws, A, B, and C. The Mules sent three teams to compete in the A and B flights.

In the A flight, junior captain Sam Riordan and freshman Isabella Suk lost their first round to the top pair from Wesleyan Katie Fleischman and Nika Vesley. In their first round of consolation, they matched up against a duo from MIT. Riordan won her singles match against Seraphin Castelino 6-4, 6-0, but fell in the other two matches.

In the B flight, Colby tandem of senior captain Caleigh McClain and freshman Ellie Gershaw swept their first round matchup from Trinity. McClain won 6-4, 6-3, Gershaw won 6-1, 6-4 and the pair dominated the doubles matchup 8-3 against Ella Baker and Ellie Francis. McClain and Gershaw fell in the next round to a Babson team in the following round by two matches to one.

Sophomore Caroline Kittle and freshman Amelie Gal fell in their first round in the main draw of the B flight, but dominated through the backdraw, claiming the B flight consolation title. In round one of the consolation they defeated Ripley Uyeda and Lejla Guster of Endicott by two matches to one. Kittle won her singles match 6-2, 6-1 and Gal pulled hers out in a close match tiebreaker 2-6, 7-6, 12-10. In the following round they won both singles matches again to move past Baker and Francis. In the final round, they swept Annika Chai and Jaskirat Kaur of Mount Holyoke. Kittle won 6-3, 6-2, Gal outlasted her opponent 6-2, 4-6, 11-9, and the duo won 8-3 in doubles to bring home the title.

The Mules fall competitions have come to a close as they head into the offseason. The women will begin their spring matches in early March.
