Box Score Lewiston, Maine - The Colby Women's Tennis Team kicked off their fall season with strong performances at the Wallach Women's Invitational this past weekend (September 11th -12th). With the Wallach Invitational being one of three tournaments this fall for the women that count for individual rankings, the Mules were ready to make a big impact right away. The tournament was a Round-Robin format, meaning players played two singles and one doubles match per round. Three rounds were played per day against a mix of Bates, Trinity, Brandeis, and Bowdoin players. Leading day one at the Wallach was Senior Co-Captain Carly Levitz, who scored two singles victories over Brandeis and Bates opponents by scores of 6-4 and 6-1, respectively. Freshman Reimi Kusaka made her debut pairing with Levitz to win two doubles matches.
Freshman Caroline Kittle also played her first matches in the Colby uniform and on day two, she scored two singles victories and one doubles victory with Senior Katherine Dougherty. Day two also saw Sophomore Samantha Riordan using her undefeated spring singles season last year to win. The Wallach Invitational also saw the return of Senior Olivia Scordo, who was dealing with injuries for the past few seasons. Scordo came back with a bang, winning two doubles matches with Sophomore Riya Ravi against Brandeis and Bates opponents by scores of 7-5 and 6-3, respectively.
Senior Co-Captain Lindsey Hernandez, who is coming off a strong spring season which saw her rise to #3 singles, had this to say about the weekend: "We were so grateful to be playing the Wallach this weekend after a difficult year not being able to compete. All of our players showcased the true spirit of Colby tennis, having fun and fighting until the end. We're so excited to keep working hard towards our spring season!"
Overall, the Mules won 11 three-match rounds over the weekend. This was only second to Bowdoin, who won 15 rounds. Brandeis won 10 rounds while Bates and Trinity won 5.
