Baseball Splits in Final Doubleheader Against the Jumbos

Waterville, Maine - The Mules were able to split their doubleheader games on Sunday against Tufts University Jumbos.  Winning the first game 5-4 on a walk-off sacrifice fly, the Mules were hoping to carry their late-game offense into the second game, which they would lose 0-17.

Elijah Cohen, despite giving up four runs, was able to hold the Jumbos scoreless after the first two innings in game one.  Senior Frank Driscoll came in to relieve Cohen and would allow no hits, strikeout three, and be credited with the win.  With the pitching staff able to curb the Jumbos offense, the Mules were able to come back from a four run deficit and tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning of an RBI sacrifice fly by senior Andrew Russell.  Sophomore Matthew Panker came in to pinch run in extra innings for Dylan Nastri, which he would score on a sacrifice fly from Caleb Jung, and the Mules would take the game 5-4.

Prakash 2020-21Game two proved to be more difficult than the first.  First year Matthew Scibilio would start the game for the Mules and pitch 2.0 innings and give up five runs, only three of which were earned.  Junior John Doyle came into the game to help relieve his Mules, pitching 3.1 innings and giving up four runs.  Despite the heavy offense from the Jumbos, first year Amogh Prakash (pictured left) came in in the bottom of the seventh inning as a pinch-hitter where he would get a single in his first ever collegiate at bat.  However, the Mules would end up falling 0-17.

First year Cohen commented on the day saying "I though the team showed great resilience in game one today to be able to come back from an early 4-0 deficit.  It took the whole team's effort to get the win, started with Driscoll pitching lights out in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings and key hitting to get us on the board that led to Jung's walk off.  Unfortunately, our energy didn't carry over in game two, but we're looking forward to Trinity next weekend."

The Mules will travel to Hartford, Connecticut to play the Trinity College Bantams on Saturday April 24th.  Please remember to abide by COVID guidelines as no spectators will be permitted.  The games will be streamed from the Athletics website, if you would like to watch.
