Box Score Gorham, Maine - The women's hockey team started their season off strong with a win against University of Southern Maine. Unable to play last week due to many girls being quarantined they brought the fire and excitement of a team that's been itching to play for months. The time has come and they were finally able to take the ice.
#20 Lily Von Stade '21
The Mules started off even against the Huskies, unable to score during the first period. It wasn't until
Jillian Mazzocca (12) scored unassisted in the second period that the Mules were able to get in the groove. USM answered just minutes after to tie it up. Lily Von Stade (20) scored the winning goal with an assist from
Natalie Maus (26) and
Tay Munson (2) 9:42 into the third period. The Huskies, in a hail mary attempt, played with six players on the ice for the last minute trying to tie the game, but to no avail. The Mules released 28 shots against the Huskies and only allowed 16 in return, making it difficult to get opportunities to play even with the Mules.
Savannah Shaw (29) played in goal for the Mules today and had 15 saves, staying fairly consistent throughout the entire game. She saw the most shots in the third period, not letting any of them by her. A strong defense, preventing many shots and saving the ones that were fired, allowed the Mules to relax into their first game and get their feet under them for the games to come.
The Mules will be playing University of Southern Maine at home next Saturday March 20th at 3 pm. Fans are still not allowed to enter the rink for COVID reasons so we ask that you stream the game from the comfort and safety of your own home.
