Waterville, Maine- Colby men's Soccer played against their rival, the Bowdoin Polar Bears Tuesday under the lights. The final box score was 2-1 with Bowdoin taking the lead. The lose brings the Mules to 4-4-1 and Bowdoin to 6-3 for the season.
The Polar Bears started the game with possession of the ball. Soon Colby took the ball back and Sophomore Mule Ethan Franco put a shot on net in the first minute of play, saved by Bowdoin keeper. In the sixth minute Bowdoin was able to put a goal into the Mule's net when Bowdoin player Kai DiGrande scored. The Mules had multiple shots on goal in the following minutes from Ethan Franco and Jared Wood. Although there were no goals from either team in the rest of the first half, the Mule's pressured the Bowdoin defense and held their line strong. The first half ended at 1-0 with Bowdoin in the lead.
The second half started out at an especially aggressive pace. The Mules having possession at kick off, came out with a new tenacity. It was clear to all watching that the Colby Mule's were on a mission to change the current box score. The ball stayed on Bowdoin's defensive third for the majority of the second half. The Mule's hammered shot after shot and maintained possession, with Bowdoin offering little in response. In the first 15 minutes, shots were seen from Colby's Ethan Franco, Aidan O'Brien, Ethan Fabricant, and Max Jacobs, all saved by Bowdoin keeper. Finally, 20 minutes into the second half, Colby evened the score, with a goal from Paul Hawkins. This goal tied the game with a box score of 1-1. As the pressure increased, aggression followed from both teams. The half ended with tensions high between the rival schools. The first 90 minutes of regular play left the box score at 1-1.
Steam rose on the field as the teams took their place for the beginning of the first overtime. Although Colby continued their possession, Bowdoin found themselves in Colby's defensive third in the fourth minute of overtime. A Bowdoin player snuck a goal into the Mule's net with a ground ball from the edge of the 18 yard box in the fourth minute of play. The goal ended the game with a final box score of 2-1, Bowdoin in the lead.
The Mule's play again on Saturday at 2:00pm against Williams College, in Massachusetts.
