Offense comes alive, Colby beats USM 5-3

WATERVILLE, Maine-  The Colby College Men's Ice Hockey team cruised to a non conference victory over the University of Southern Maine, 5-3.

GAME NOTES: Colby's offense exploded with four goals in the second period, to improve their record to 6-9-2 overall. Joe MacDonald (photo inset) in goal earned his first win of the season, talling 22 saves and earning a .880 save percentage.

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE MULES:

  • Captain Spencer Hewson punched the ticket for the first goal at 9:08 of the first period. Mark Leprine assisted on the play.
  • In the first minute of the second period, Michael Morrissey rocketed the puck into the net off the Carter Breitenfeldt assist at the 0:32 mark.
  • J.P. Schuhlen increased the lead to 3-1 with the power play goal. Hewson earned his second point of the night with the assist at 4:55.
  • Morrissey then scored his second at 10:51 off a Kienan Scott pass.
  • At the 15:40 mark of the second period Alex Bourhas crashed the net and scored off a Brendan Murphy rebound. 

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE HUSKIES:

  • Adam Papayoanou tied the game at 1-1 with the power play goal at 15:27 in the first period.
  • Down 5-1 after the second period, the Huskies answered with another power play goal this time scored by Jesse Kestenbaum at 8:35.
  • Ethan Bassile then decreased the deficit to two when he scored at 13:23 in the final frame. Mark Tomaschek and Kestenbaum assisted on the play.
  • Paul Leger finished his night with 29 saves.

KEY STATS:

  • The Mules led in shots, 35-24.
  • Colby also controlled the faceoffs all over the ice, 43-23.
  • With his two goal night, Morrissey has now earned four goals and four assists.
  • Michael Thomas and Bourhas led the Mules with five shots each.

NEXT MATCHUP: Colby Men's Hockey now awaits to travel to Bowdoin College on Saturday (2/1). The rivalry game is scheduled for 7:00pm.
