LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Colby College's Sophie Stokes Cerkvenik (Britt, Minn.) showed Friday that she is a national title contender after finishing with the top preliminary time among the 22 participants in the 100-meter hurdles at the NCAA Women's Track and Field Championships.
Stokes Cerkvenik finished in a time of 14.50 in winning heat two and easily had the best showing. Fitchburg State's Annie Woolley also ran in heat two and had a time of 14.57 for the second-best clocking. The other two heat winners both had 14.60.
"When I was at the start, all I was thinking about was to go out there and win my heat since the winner of each heat automatically qualifies and advances to the finals," Stokes Cerkvenik said. "My coach and I have been working hard all season, and it feels good to be advancing with today's results, but there's still more work to do tomorrow."
Stokes Cerkvenik can run faster -- she had a 14.34 school record at MIT's last chance qualifier meet. She came into the event as the 11th seed with that 14.34. Stokes Cerkvenik will be the lone hurdler from the New England Small College Athletic Conference.
There will be nine competitors in Saturday's 2 p.m. championship final. The top eight finishers will earn All-American honors. The University of Wisconsin at La Crosse has a nine-lane track.
