Late rally not enough for men's basketball

GORHAM, Maine -- Colby College's Sam Jefferson scored 27 points, but University of Southern Maine led at halftime and held on in the final minutes for a 92-87 non-conference men's basketball victory Tuesday night.

The Mules, still playing without injured forward Dean Weiner, drop to 10-10 overall. Colby plays at Williams College on Friday at 7 p.m.
 
By the numbers
* Jefferson was 10-for-16 from the field, including 6-of-11 shooting from 3-point range.
 
* Matt Hanna (pictured) added 15 points, a collegiate-high nine assists, and seven rebounds for the Mules. Sean Gilmore added 13 points on 6-for-10 shooting and three blocked shots, while Alex Dorion had 12 points. Ethan Schlager had nine points, nine rebounds, and two assists.
 
* Grayson Waterman had 27 points to lead the Huskies (3-17).
 
* The Mules had a 43-27 rebounding advantage, but the Huskies had just five turnovers and shot 50.7 percent from the field.
 
Game highlights
* Jefferson had 13 points and Gilmore scored 11 in the first half, but the Huskies still led 46-40 at the break.
 
* USM led 70-57 with 9:54 to play and still led 88-74 with just under two minutes to play. Colby, though, stormed back behind 3-point shooting and cut the margin to 91-87. Jefferson, Hanna, and Schlager all hit threes during the run.
