WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College's Robin Spofford, the leading hitter in the NESCAC, went 2-for-2 in the Mules' 8-0 loss to Bowdoin College on Friday.
Allison Rutz pitched a two-hit shutout over five innings to lead the Polar Bears.
The Polar Bears improve to 18-6 overall and 3-1 in the conference, while the Mules drop to 7-13 and 0-4 in the league. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at noon at the Colby Softball Complex.
Rutz struck out two and walked none while facing just 17 batters in the complete game.
Spofford (pictured) took over the league lead in hitting and is now batting .492 on the season. She also is tied for sixth in stolen bases with seven after stealing one base Friday.
Marisa O'Toole went 2-for-2, scored twice, and had a walk for the Polar Bears. Caroline Rice added two hits, two RBI, and one run. Lauren O'Shea also had two hits and drove in one run.
Bowdoin scored a lone run in the first inning after Colby got the first two outs of the inning. O'Toole singled, stole second base, and came in on an RBI single from Rice.
The Polar Bears added two more runs in the second inning. Claire McCarthy singled with one out and advanced to third on a two-out double by Jordan Gowdy. Ali Miller followed with a two-run single for a 3-0 margin.
Bowdoin went up 6-0 with three runs in the third. O'Toole and Rice had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Rutz followed with a double to plate O'Toole and get Rice to third. Samantha Valdivia grounded out to second base to get Rice home and Rutz to third. Rutz later scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Gowdy.
Rice's sacrifice fly to center field in the fourth inning brought home Emily Griffin with the seventh run.
Bowdoin, which was scheduled to host Friday's game, was considered the home team and batted second. The Polar Bears won by the eight-run rule in the fifth inning when O'Shea singled home Valdivia, who had doubled to lead off the inning.
