WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College softball team scored six runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead and then held on for a 6-5 win over Husson University in the opening game of a doubleheader Friday at the Colby Softball Complex.
Husson got a complete game shutout from Alannah Healy for a 7-0 win in the second game.
Colby (5-8) trailed 3-0 before scoring runs in the top of the fifth inning. Wiley Holton led off with a double and was pinch-ran for by Lucie Cunningham. After a ground out pushed Cunningham to third base, Carly Swartz (pictured left) used her speed to get on base with an infield single. Katie McLaughlin followed and ripped a shot into right center field to score both runs.
The Mules went ahead 4-3 when McLaughlin moved to third on a passed ball. Robin Spofford had an infield single and promptly stole second base. Grace Farnkoff had a squeeze bunt to score McLaughlin and get Spofford to third base. Skylar Labbe followed up with a double to bring in Spofford with the fourth run.
In the sixth, Wiley Holton had a one-out single and later stole second base. Swartz singled to bring Holton to third base. McLaughlin doubled again to bring in both runners for a 6-3 lead.
The Eagles (10-7) answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Briana Brochu tripled to lead off the inning and Chloe Gorey came up next and smacked a double to make it 6-4. Olivia Smith later doubled to plate Gorey with the final run of the game. Wiley Holton was able to get a pop up for the second out and Holly Lallis came on to pitch and get the final out of the sixth on a pop to shortstop.

Morgan Coleman had a two-run single to bring in Arika Brochu and Briana Brochu in the first inning. The Eagles added a third run in the third when Nicole Andrade scored on a double steal.
Healy was the pitching story in the nightcap, striking out six and walking two in her shutout. The hitting story was Tamara Aunchman's two home runs and three hits in the game. Casey Lopes added two hits, two RBI, and one run scored.
Aunchman led off the bottom of the second with her first homer of the game. Lopes doubled to bring in Sarah Bragg and Jen Jones to make it 3-0. Briana Brochu singled to score Lopes with the fourth run.
In the fourth inning, Olivia Smith had a one-out walk and Aunchman doubled her to third base. The Mules were able to get the second out of the inning, but Olivia Maynard ripped a double to score two runs.
