BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Colby College men's soccer team had nine of 13 shots on goal and some good scoring chances, but Bowdoin College kept the Mules off the scoreboard in a 1-0 win on Tuesday.
Colby drops to 6-4-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the NESCAC, while Bowdoin is 10-3 and is in second place in the league at 6-2.
Game highlights
* The first promising look for either team came at 11:11 when Cam Clouse hurled a long throw-in from the left side. Jansen Aoyama's header skidded just over the crossbar and out of play.
* Jack Shultz provided the game’s only goal in the 38th minute. Drake Byrd controlled the ball low on the left side and crossed to Shultz on the back post.
* The Mules ramped up pressure in the second half, forcing Stevie Van Siclen to make six saves in the final 45 minutes. Van Siclen’s first point-blank challenge came off the foot of Evan Dwyer. Van Siclen dove to his right to make the save.
* Van Siclen made three consecutive saves, making an initial stop and then denying a pair of rebounds, with less than 20 minutes remaining.
* With 8:30 left on the clock, Jake Stenquist made a goal line save on a shot by Ryan Lauderback.
By the numbers
* Colby goalkeeper Avery Gibson made seven saves.
* Van Siclen ended the day with nine stops.
* Both teams took 13 shots, while Bowdoin held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
