Box Score LEWISTON, Maine — Julia Saul pitched a complete game and was helped out with 18 hits by the Colby College softball team in a 12-1 win over Bates College in NESCAC East play Friday at Lafayette Street Field.
The Mules are still alive for a NESCAC playoff spot heading into the final day of league play Saturday. Colby moved to 13-15 overall and 4-6 in the league. The Mules and Bates (5-30, 0-10 NESCAC) play a doubleheader Saturday at noon on the Colby Softball Field. Bowdoin and Trinity are both 5-5 and play two games on Saturday.
Tori Sansone led the Mules with three hits, three RBI, and two runs. Skylar Labbe also had three hits and scored twice, while Grace Farnkoff had two hits, two RBI, and scored a run. Sam Rizzo was 2-for-2, Saul helped herself out with a pair of hits and an RBI, and Paige Hartnett also had two hits.
Saul allowed five hits, struck out six, and walked three.
The Mules had a lone run in the first when Robin Spofford scored on a sacrifice fly by Schatz.
After Bates scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the first, Colby took control with five runs in the third. Sansone singled to right field, Labbe walked, and Schatz singled to center to load the bases. Farnkoff had a two-run single to right center to plate Labbe and Sansone. After a walk to Saul, Emma Berger's sacrifice fly to center field scored Schatz for a 4-1 margin.
Bates went for a pitching change in the third inning, but the Mules were able to get two more runs in for a 6-1 margin. Rizzo reached on a sacrifice bunt that brought in Farnkoff. Spofford's infield single brought in Saul with the final run.
Colby blew the game open with six runs in the top of the seventh inning. Hartnett singled to center field to lead off the inning and moved to second on a bunt single by Rizzo. After a force out, Spofford reached on an error to load the bases. Sansone followed with a bases clearing double to left field and went to third on the throw. She scored her run on a wild pitch.
Zena Robert had a single and drove in a run for the Mules. Her single to left field brought in Labbe for the 11th run of the game. Saul had an RBI grounder to bring in Schatz.
