SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Karolina Serhan had 14 kills, just one attack error, and hit .619 for the Colby College volleyball team in a tough 3-0 loss to Catholic University at Swarthmore College's Garnet Classic on Friday night.
Paige Hanssen had 15 kills in a 3-0 loss to Scranton University in the first match of the night. Despite averaging five kills per set, Hanssen and the Mules fell 25-23, 25-20, 25-10.
Serhan (pictured) also had three service aces in the match against Catholic (21-9). Hanssen kept up her strong play with 12 kills, 11 defensive digs, and two service aces. Alexa Busser finished with nine kills and two blocks, while Elizabeth Noyes delivered seven kills and six digs. Molly Manuel added 22 assists and Emily Moslener had 15 for the setters. Kate Wincek contributed 13 digs.
Colby had 14 kills or more in all three sets against Catholic and hit a fine .244 as a team. The Mules lost a close 25-20, 26-24, 26-24 match to the Cardinals.
The Mules appeared to have the third set under control with a 24-19 lead after a Hanssen kill. However, Catholic scored the next seven points to pull out the set and the match.
Colby's Nicole Petherbridge had a kill to make it 24-24 in the second set, but the Cardinals scored the final two points.
Serhan added six kills and three blocks for the Mules in the opening match against Scranton. Moslener finished with 11 assists and nine defensive digs, while Wincek led all Colby (5-19) players with 14 digs. Mae Sefransky had nine assists and Noyes added nine digs.
The Mules were tied 22-22 in the opening when Scranton scored three of the final four points. Serhan had a kill to cut the margin to 24-23, but Kristen Sweeney closed out the set with a kill.
Colby trailed 10-8 in the second set, only to see Scranton (17-14) go on a 6-2 scoring run for a 16-10 margin. The Mules got as close as 23-20 before the Royals scored the final two points.
Scranton led 7-6 in the third set and added a 5-0 scoring run to take a 12-6 lead.
