Hartford, Conn. - The Colby College Mules showed grit and a potent second-half passing attack, but ultimately dropped their 2026 season opener 34-14 to the Trinity College Bantams on Saturday afternoon. Despite facing a steep early deficit, the Mules' offense found its rhythm after the intermission, putting together two impressive scoring drives and flashing the potential of their aerial attack.
The Mules (0-1) spent much of the first half relying on a heavily taxed defense against a relentless Bantam attack. Linebacker
Lincoln Merrill was a force from the opening whistle for Colby, flying around the field and consistently blowing up plays behind the line of scrimmage. While the Mules struggled to establish their ground game and sustain drives early on, defensive standouts like
Owen Haight and
Nicholas Cox kept the team fighting. Despite the defensive effort, Colby entered the halftime break facing a 21-0 deficit.
Emerging from the locker room, Colby's offense immediately flipped the script. Quarterback
Stephen Gill engineered a lightning-fast 5-play, 75-yard scoring drive that took just 2:25 off the clock. Gill capped the explosive series with a touchdown strike to put the Mules on the board. Although the Bantams managed to answer with a score of their own later in the quarter, Colby's offensive confidence had clearly been ignited.
The Mules put together their most masterful drive of the day in the fourth quarter. Taking over deep in their own territory at the 12-yard line, Gill orchestrated a grueling 13-play, 88-yard march that consumed over five minutes of game clock and showcased Colby's ability to execute under pressure. Wide receiver
Ray Thornton delivered the exclamation point, hauling in a 15-yard touchdown pass from Gill. Defensively, the Mules continued to battle until the final whistle, with the secondary stepping up to prevent any explosive passing plays late in the game.
Statistically, Colby leaned heavily on its defensive leaders to stay in the fight. Merrill finished with a game-high 10 total tackles, including a highly disruptive 2.0 tackles for loss. Haight added eight stops for the Mules. Offensively, Gill proved efficient with his opportunities, throwing for 140 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions.
Sean Trinder was Gill's most reliable target, snagging a team-high four receptions for 50 yards to keep the chains moving, while Thornton maximized his touches with 22 receiving yards and a score.
Colby will will look to bounce back and secure their first win of the season when they return to action at home against Williams College on September 26.Â
