Middletown, Conn. — The No. 7 seeded Colby Men's Tennis team traveled to tournament hosts Wesleyan University on Friday afternoon for a NESCAC Quarterfinal showdown with No. 2 seeded Bowdoin College. Despite a resilient effort that saw the Mules take opening sets across several top flights, the Polar Bears ultimately secured a 4-0 victory to advance.
The match began with a highly competitive doubles session. While Bowdoin managed to claim the doubles point with 6-0 wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, the Mules' No. 3 pairing of
Kevin Mortimer and
Sean Wang were locked in a battle, trailing just 5-2 when the point was clinched and play was halted.
As the match moved to singles, Colby immediately put the Polar Bears on their heels.
Jason Daly (No. 1),
Rhys Spano (No. 2), and
Diego Sosa (No. 3) all delivered clinical opening sets, winning 6-3, 6-4, and 7-5 respectively. At the No. 4 spot,
Marco Ziets-Segura also showed immense grit, bouncing back from an opening-set loss to dominate his second set 6-3 and force a deciding third frame.
However, Bowdoin's veteran depth at the bottom of the ladder proved to be the difference. The Polar Bears picked up straight-set victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, and a three-set comeback at No. 2 singles eventually provided the fourth and deciding point for Bowdoin.
The loss concludes a 2026 campaign where the Mules navigated a difficult schedule in Division III tennis. Colby Men's Tennis concludes the season with a 6-11 overall record and will be back in action this fall.
