DeSimone hits walkoff homerun as No. 19 softball split with Bowdoin on senior day

WATERVILLE, Maine - The 19th ranked Colby College softball team celebrated senior day on Saturday by earning a split with Bowdoin College in its regular-season finale. The Mules earned a walk off 9-8 extra-inning victory in game one and fell to the Polar Bears 6-3 in the nightcap.

Prior to game two, the Mules honored six seniors, including KC DeSarno, Emma Burnham, Kathryne Clay, Carissa Cassidy, Kelsey Sullivan, and Victoria Ramirez.

GAME 1: No. 19 Colby 9, Bowdoin 8 (8 Innings)

Bowdoin (27-8, 11-7 NESCAC) got the board first in the first inning off an RBI double before Colby (25-10, 11-7 NESCAC) took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Cassidy led off the inning with a double to left field, advanced to third on a wild pitch scored on a double down the left field line by Burnham. Burnham tallied the Mules' second run of the inning off a sacrifice fly by junior Ella Wilcox after advancing to third on a wild pitch for a 2-1 lead.

The Mules then saw the Polar Bears regain the lead in the third on an RBI single through the left side and a two-run double to center.

Colby retook the lead in the bottom half of the third inning off two doubles and a home run. Cassidy led off the inning by singling to center, stole second and scored on a double to right field by Burnham. With runners on first and second after Wilcox walked, junior Juliana Kiley roped a double to right center allowing Burnham and Wilcox to cross the plate to give the Mules a 5-4 advantage. Kiley then advanced to third after sophomore Avery Lyman smashed a one-out double to left field before scoring off a three-run bomb to right center by junior Caroline DeSimone to push its lead to 8-4.

Bowdoin forced extra-innings after scoring four runs in the fifth off a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a three-run double to left field.

DeSimone hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to win the game.

Sophomore Sophia Meade picked up her tenth win of the season after allowing four unearned runs off four hits with six punch-outs in 5.1 innings of relief work.

DeSimone recorded her second career multi-home run game with four RBIs to match the single-game program record for home runs, while Burnham finished with two hits, including a double and two RBIs. Kiley also added two RBIs to help the Mules secure a new single-season team program record for wins with their 25th victory of the season.

GAME 2: Bowdoin 6, No. 19 Colby 3

The Polar Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first off an RBI single to right field, a wild pitch and a ground out to shortstop before the Mules got one back in the bottom half of the first inning.

Cassidy led off the inning with a single up the middle, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then advanced to third after Burnham laid down a perfect sac bunt and scored on a two-out single to center by Kiley.

Bowdoin added two runs in the fifth on double down the left field line.

DeSimone made it 5-2 with a sacrifice fly to center in the sixth that allowed junior pinch-runner Kat Xiong, who entered the game for Wilcox, to score the Mules' second run of the game. Wilcox led off the inning with a single up the middle.

The Mules tried to rally in the final inning but only found one run off a fielder's choice.

In the circle, junior Ashley Correll (0-1) took the loss after allowing three earned runs off one hit in 0.2 innings of work. First-years Sharlotte Stazinski and Lucy Stahis combined to allow three earned runs off seven hits in 6.1 innings of relief work.

Offensively, Ramirez led the Mules with two hits, while Cassidy, Burnham, Wilcox, Kiley, Clay and Lyman each added a hit apiece in the setback.

The Mules will now head to the 2026 NESCAC Championship tournament next weekend at Bowdoin College's Pickard Field. Their opponent and seed will be announced later.
