Softball drops opening game to MIT in NCAA regional

BANGOR, Maine – The Colby College softball team dropped its opening game of the 2026 Bangor, Maine NCAA Division III Regional 7-2 on Thursday to Massachusetts Institute of Technology at O'Keefe Field on the campus of Husson University.

In the opening inning, junior Juliana Kiley roped a two-out double to left center before junior Ella Wilcox was issued a full-count walk to put runners on first and second for senior Victoria Ramirez. Ramirez would then proceed to drive in Kiley and Wilcox on a two-out triple to right field to give Colby (26-12) a 2-0 lead.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (34-9) responded quickly in the bottom half of the opening frame to cut its deficit to one off a sacrifice fly after their leadoff hitter tripled to begin the inning.

The Engineers took the lead in the fifth with a five-run inning off four hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly. The highlight of the fifth inning for the Mules was when junior Caroline DeSimone made an outstanding diving catch on a sinking line drive in right field that resulted into the Engineers' sacrifice fly.

MIT added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI double to right center to give them a 7-2 advantage.

First-year Sharlotte Stazinski (9-6) took the loss in the circle for the Mules after allowing six earned runs off eight hits in 4-0 innings of relief work.

Ramirez finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a triple, while Kiley, sophomore Avery Lyman, senior Kelsey Sullivan and sophomore Julia Berry each recorded a hit in the setback.

The Mules will be back in action tomorrow against No. 12 Husson University with first-pitch set for 1:30 p.m.
