Waterville, Maine - The Colby Baseball team is heading to the postseason for the fifth consecutive season. After a regular season that saw the Mules post an impressive 19-13 overall record, Colby has earned the No. 4 seed in the NESCAC East and is set to travel to Memorial Field to take on the West's top-seeded Amherst Mammoths in a best-of-three NESCAC Quarterfinal series starting Friday, May 1.
The series features two of the most balanced squads in the conference. Amherst (22-11) enters as the top spot in the West Division, led by a high-octane offense that recently put up 16 runs against Trinity and swept a crucial doubleheader against Hamilton to clinch the top seed.
Colby, however, brings a battle-tested roster that has thrived on road trips and tight conference battles. The Mules finished the regular season with a 5-7 NESCAC record, securing their spot in the bracket with a key divisional wins over Bowdoin and Tufts and a three game sweep of Bates.Â
These two teams have only met once in the NESCAC Tournament. The Mules defeated the Mammoths, 11-3, in the opening round of championship weekend in 2024.
Mules to Watch
- Patrick Shrake (.403 AVG): The junior has been the heartbeat of the Colby lineup all season. Leading the team in batting average, hits (48), runs (28), on-base percentage (.450), and stolen bases (12 for 13), Shrake's ability to jump-start the offense will be critical against Amherst's pitching staff.
- Jeb Burkhart (Home Runs & RBI Leader): Burkhart has been the Mules' primary power source this spring. Leading the team in home runs (five), RBIs (27) and slugging (.521 average), Burkhart's ability to drive in runs in high-leverage situations will be a major threat to any opposing starter in this series.
- Thomas Rioux & Matt Higgins (Pitching): Rioux (50) and Higgins (35.1) have combined for 85.1 innings pitched this season and will more than likely see those numbers jump over the course of the weekend. Higgins leads the team in strikeouts with 36 followed by Rioux with 33.Â
The NESCAC Quarterfinals follow a best-of-three format, with the winner advancing to the NESCAC Championship double-elimination tournament (May 8-10) hosted at Trinity. The Mules are looking to advanced to the championship weekend for the fifth year in a row.Â
