Waterville, Maine - The Colby Baseball team hosted the Polar Bears of Bowdoin College on Friday afternoon for their final weekend of regular-season conference play.
The contest began as a defensive stalemate, with
Thomas Rioux and the Colby defense holding the visitors scoreless through the first three innings.
Patrick Shrake and
Myles Gythfeldt anchored the middle infield, combining for multiple ground outs to keep the pressure on the visitors. Bowdoin managed to break the tie in the fourth frame, utilizing a two-run home run to center field to open the scoring. They continued to find gaps in the fifth and sixth innings, highlighted by a grand slam that extended their lead. The visitors added their final runs in the seventh behind several base hits and capitalizing on miscues in the field.
Adam Schwartz,
Aidan Murray, and
Charles Collins all made appearances in relief for the Mules.Â
The Mules' offense saw contributions from several players throughout the game.
Myles Gythfeldt sparked the early effort with a single in the first inning.
Jeb Burkhart put together a multi-hit performance, finishing the day 2-for-2 with singles in the second and fifth innings.
Marco Zirpolo also reached base safely with a base hit to shortstop in the fifth, while
Corey Aubuchon showcased his speed on the base paths by stealing second earlier in the contest. In the final frame,
David Parker kept the energy up with a single to right field to move
Brady Capps into scoring position.
Colby returns to action Saturday at Bowdoin for a doubleheader at 12 and 2pm to close out the rivalry weekend.
