Mules Battle #17 Bowdoin

Waterville, ME – The Colby College women's tennis team hosted inner-state rival #17 Bowdoin College on Wednesday at the Alfond-Wales Tennis Courts, dropping a 7-0 decision to the nationally ranked Polar Bears. Despite the final score, the match featured several tightly contested flights as the Mules battled through their final home stand of the regular season.

 

Bowdoin gained the early advantage by securing the doubles point. The Polar Bears took the No. 2 flight 6-3 to open the round. However, Colby responded with a strong performance at the No. 3 spot, where Ella Novion and Jade Finestone earned a 6-4 victory. The doubles point came down to a battle at the No. 1 position, where Isabella Suk and Michaela Landry pushed their opponents to a tiebreaker before ultimately falling 6-7(2).

 

In singles play, the Polar Bears showed their depth by winning all six matches. At the No. 1 position, Jade Finestone forced a highly competitive second set tiebreaker before falling 1-6, 6-7(6). Ella Novion fell at the No. 2 position with a score of 2-6, 0-6, while Michaela Landry was defeated at the No. 3 spot 1-6, 0-6. Soumya Wijesekera also faced a tough opponent at the No. 4 flight, falling 1-6, 3-6. The bottom of the lineup saw the Mules' seniors continue to compete hard in their final home appearance. Senior captain Isabella Suk put up a strong fight at the No. 5 spot, battling through a close first set in a 5-7, 2-6 decision. Senior captain Amelie Gal also competed at the No. 6 position, falling 3-6, 1-6.

 

The Mules will now shift their focus to a big home weekend in Waterville, hosting Middlebury on Saturday and Williams on Sunday, as they prepare for the upcoming NESCAC tournament.
