Brunswick, Maine — The Colby Men's Tennis team faced a tough road test on Thursday afternoon, falling 7-0 to No. 9 Bowdoin. Despite the sweep, the Mules battled through several tight frames against one of the top-ranked programs in the country.
The Polar Bears took an early 1-0 lead by sweeping the doubles point. Colby's No. 3 pairing of
Diego Sosa and
Bilal Asim pushed their opponents to the limit, staying on serve for much of the set before falling 7-5 to Aden Dorros and Mick Tamas. At the top flight,
Jason Daly and
Marco Ziets-Segura also kept things competitive in a 6-4 loss to Jackson Codd and Mark Kneiss.
In singles play, the Bowdoin's depth proved to be the difference, though the Mules refused to go quietly in the middle of the lineup. At the No. 4 position,
Bilal Asim played a back-and-forth second set against Cameron Zia, ultimately falling in a tight tiebreak (6-4, 7-6 [7-3]).
The most dramatic match of the day occurred at the No. 5 spot.
Antonio Lee dropped the opening set 6-1 but roared back with a dominant 6-1 performance in the second to force a deciding third-set tiebreaker. In a points-for-points battle, Lee narrowly fell to Bowdoin's Simon Catanzaro by a score of 10-8.
Colby (5-7, 3-3 NESCAC) returns to action this Saturday, April 18, when they host No. 3 Tufts University at 12:00pm.
