HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Colby College women's tennis team finished its spring break campaign on a high note Thursday, securing back-to-back victories over Carleton College and Oberlin College. The Mules displayed both dominance and poise, navigating a marathon morning match against Carleton before returning in the evening to defeat Oberlin.
In the morning session against Carleton, Colby grinded out a 7-0 victory in a match that was much closer than the final scoreline suggested. The Mules secured the doubles point in dramatic fashion as Isabella Suk and Michaela Landry won a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-3) at the No. 1 spot. Kat Lowy and Ella Novion added a 7-5 win at No. 2 to help clinch the early lead. Singles play featured three marathon matches that all went Colby's way: Jade Finestone rallied for a 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (12-10) win at the top flight, while Ella Novion took a tight No. 2 singles match 7-6 (7-4), 7-5. Tina Barrow also survived a back-and-forth thriller at No. 5, winning 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (7-9), 1-0 (10-4). Soumya Wijesekera and Michaela Landry both earned efficient 6-2, 6-3 wins, while Isabella Suk capped the scoring with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 result at the No. 6 position.
The momentum carried into the evening as Colby defeated Oberlin 6-1 to complete the sweep. The Mules again took the doubles point, led by a clinical 6-0 performance from Landry and Suk at the top spot. Waka Aida and Kat Lowy secured a 6-3 win at No. 2, while Kendall Skulley and Abby Hess added a 6-4 victory at No. 3. In singles, the Mules were nearly untouchable at the top of the ladder; Ella Novion (6-0, 6-1), Soumya Wijesekera (6-1, 6-1), and Tina Barrow (6-1, 6-0) dropped only four games combined across the first three flights. Isabella Suk added a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4, and Amelie Gal showed great resilience by coming back from a 2-5 second-set deficit to win her match 6-1, 7-5.
With these two victories, the Mules conclude their southern road trip and will return north to resume NESCAC play. Colby is scheduled to host inner-state rival Bates College on Saturday, April 4, for its first home NESCAC match of the spring season.
