CLERMONT, Fla. - The Colby College softball team picked up a pair of wins on Tuesday at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida, defeating Luther College, 8-0, before edging Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 6-4.
Colby 8, Luther College 0 (6 Innings):
The Mules' offense erupted in the first game of the day, scoring eight runs on 12 hits to secure the run-rule win over Luther (7-5).
After three scoreless innings, Colby (8-1) broke the game open with a three-run fourth inning. Junior
Ella Wilcox started the rally with a single through the left side that allowed her to reach third safely on an error before senior
Victoria Ramirez reached base after being hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. JuniorÂ
Caroline DeSimone then brought home the first run with a single to right field, allowing Wilcox to score before sophomore
Julia Berry drove in DeSimone and Ramirez with a single to right field to build a 3-0 lead.
Colby added five more runs in the sixth inning to put the game away. A solo home run to left field from DeSimone highlighted the frame, while seniors
Carissa Cassidy and
Emma Burnham hit back-to-back doubles to drive in two runs. Two RBI singles by Ramirez and Wilcox extended the Mule advantage to 8-0.
Several Mules had strong performances at the plate. Wilcox led the way with four hits, including an RBI and a run scored. DeSimone collected two hits with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI, while Berry added two RBI.
In the circle, senior Kc DeSarno delivered a dominant outing, allowing one hit over four shutout innings to earn her fourth win of the season. Sophomore
Sophia Meade pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Meade allowed one hit and struck out two hits in the run-rule victory.
Colby 6, Massachusetts Institute of Technology 4:
In the second game of the day, Colby held off Massachusetts Institute of Technology (10-2) for a 6-4 victory behind another strong pitching effort, this time from freshman
Sharlotte Stazinski.
After three scoreless innings, MIT scored a pair of runs off a triple down the right-field line and on a throwing error later in the inning to make it 3-0.
An RBI ground out from senior
Emma Burnham in the fifth cut the Engineer lead to two, however MIT executed a delayed double steal to put them back up by three.
The Mules rallied in the sixth, using three singles and a double to take the lead. Ramirez reached base on a one-out double to left field before being lifted for pinch runner freshman
Josephine Kim. Kim advanced to third on a single to center field by freshman
Sophia Hammel that allowed her to reach second on the throw to third. Berry followed with a single to center field, allowing Kim to score. Cassidy was issued a walk to load the bases for Burnham, who proceeded to smash a two-run single to left field, plating Berry and Hammel to tie the game at 4-4. Juliana Kiley singled home an insurance run to make it 6-4.
Stazinski allowed one Engineer on base off a one-out error, but she got the next two Engineers out to secure the win.
Burnham led the Mules with three hits and three RBI while Cassidy went 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and two runs scored in the come from behind victory.
In the circle, Stazinski went the full seven for Colby to improve to 2-0. She scattered nine hits with six strikeouts in the victory over the Engineers.
The Mules return to action on Wednesday when they face Oberlin College at 12:15 p.m. and Kalamazoo College at 2:30 p.m.
