Game Recap: Softball |

Softball continues hot start to season with sweep of Union, No. 13 Wisconsin-Oshkosh

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Colby College softball team continued its strong start to the season on Sunday, earning a pair of victories at The Spring Games with a 9-0 run-rule victory over Union College followed by 5-4 win over No. 13 University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Colby 9, Union (N.Y.) (5 Innings):

Colby (6-1) got on the board early, plating a run in the first inning when senior Emma Burnham scored on an error to take a 1–0 lead. After four scoreless innings, the Mules broke the game open with a dominant offensive surge in the fifth. Junior Juliana Kiley started the rally with an RBI double to center field that scored junior Ella Wilcox, and she later came home on a single by senior Victoria Ramirez to extend the lead to 3–0.

The momentum continued when junior Kat Xiong singled through the left side and advanced to third on an error, allowing both freshman Sophia Hammel and senior Kathryne Clay to score. Senior Carissa Cassidy followed with a bunt single that drove in Xiong, then later scored herself on another defensive miscue to push the lead to seven.

Wilcox added an RBI double to right field to score Burnham, and Kiley capped the inning with an RBI single up the middle to bring Wilcox home and seal the 9–0 win over Union (3-5).

In the circle, sophomore Sophia Meade delivered a dominant outing, throwing a five-inning shutout. Meade allowed three hits and struck out 10 while keeping Union from mounting any scoring threat as Colby secured the run-rule victory.

Wilcox finished the game 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI while Kiley drove in three runs off two hits. Clay added two hits and a run scored in the victory.

Colby 5, No. 13 University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh 4:

In the second contest, nationally ranked University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (9-3) scored three runs during the top of the first inning, but Colby responded with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame from two bases-loaded walks to Kiley and junior Caroline DeSimone and a Titan miscue.

The Mules claimed the lead for good with a two-run fifth inning, scoring both runs on errors. The Titans scored a run in the top of the seventh frame to cut their deficit to 5-4. However, Colby secured the victory by keeping the potential tying run in the batter's box.

Cassidy went 3-for-4 to pace the Mules, who out hit the Titans, 6-5.

Freshman Sharlotte Stazinski (1-0) earned the complete-game win for the Mules, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits with three strikeouts.

The Mules return to action on Tuesday when they battle Luther College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.
