Auburndale, Fla. - The Colby College Baseball Team continued its spring campaign on Friday afternoon, facing off against New York University at Lake Myrtle Park. Despite a late-inning push and out-hitting their opponents, the Mules fell short in a 6-3 contest.
The Mules' offense was active throughout the afternoon, totaling eight hits.
Patrick Shrake and
Will Burns led the way at the plate, each recording two hits. Shrake ignited the scoring early, crossing the plate in the first inning after a productive ground out by
Liam Shea-Gallagher to cut an early deficit in half. Colby's disciplined approach kept them within striking distance, as the lineup drew five walks on the day.
Tony Silva and
Myles Oo both reached base multiple times, with Silva drawing a key walk and eventually scoring in the fifth inning to keep the pressure on the Violets. In the seventh, the Mules showcased their power when
Marco Zirpolo connected on a deep fly ball to center field for a triple, driving in Burns and bringing Colby within three runs.
On the mound,
Matt Higgins,
Matt Mahoney, and
Keeler Vogt combined for a dominant performance in the strike zone, racking up 14 strikeouts over the course of the game. The bullpen was particularly effective in the middle frames, limiting NYU's scoring opportunities and allowing the Mules' defense to stay engaged.
Defensively, the Mules were supported by steady play in the outfield from
Corey Aubuchon, who recorded several fly outs to keep the Violets from extending their lead further.
Colby looks to bounce back and carry the momentum from their late-inning hits into the remainder of their Florida road trip. The Mules will return to action Saturday for a doubleheader against St. Olaf College in Davenport.
