Baseball Kicks Off New Season with Doubleheader Versus UMF

Waterville, Maine - The Colby Baseball team heads into the 2026 season this Saturday, February 28th hosting a twinbill matchup with UMaine-Farmington. This will be the third straight year the Mules open the season against the Beavers with the most recent game ending in a dominating 26-4 Colby victory. The Mules have not lost to UMF since 2004.

The team is coming off an impressive fourth-straight third place finish in the NESCAC Championship Tournament including a 23-14 overall record last year with six All-NESCAC honorees. The Mules exited eight seniors to graduation last spring and will be led by a new group of seven seniors this season; Greg Levin, Derek Woods, Thomas Rioux, Joe Sylvester, Tony Silva, Kyle Bourque, and Adam Schwartz. The team is joined by the class of 2029 consisting of eight student-athletes.

Myles Gythfeldt, the 2025 NESCAC Rookie of the Year returns to the lineup, who led the Mules last season with a solid .408 batting average (minimum requirement of 2 PA/G and 75% of games played). The sophomore also had the most RBIs (32), runs (28), and hits (53) on the team. Be on the lookout for T. Silva as well who hit above the .300 mark last year with a .321. The senior had the most doubles on the team in 2025 (11) to go along with 25 RBIs, 42 hits, and 22 runs. Gythfeldt and T. Silva were the only members of the team last season to start in all 37 games. On the mound, Rioux had the most inning pitched for the Mules last year with 54. The senior tallied 46 strikeouts only trialing to last years Conference Co-Pitcher of the Year Ryan Grecco '25 who totaled 53.

The Mules are led by Head Coach Jesse Woods, now entering his eighth season with the team. He is assisted by Taylor Lockhart, Thomas Novick, Quinn Stebbins, and Steve Lockard all returning from last year.

The first pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for noon on Coombs Field. Fans can check out the teams schedule tab to follow alongside the Mules this season and find out when they come to a location near you.
