Brunswick, Maine - The Colby College Women's Tennis team traveled to Bowdoin College over the weekend to compete against top regional competition at the 2026 New England ITA Regional Championships.
In the B Singles draw, the Mules delivered strong performances with two players advancing to the quarterfinals. Soumya Wijesekera opened her tournament with an 8-2 victory over Cayna Gahly (Amherst) in the Round of 64 before topping Alyssa Khou (Tufts) 8-4 in the Round of 32. Wijesekera continued her run by edging Ava Emrich (Smith) 8-5 in the Round of 16 to earn a spot in the quarterfinals against Bowdoin.
Seeded 9-16 in the draw, Emma Jani also put together a dominant run to the quarterfinals. Jani earned an 8-2 win over Lia Swire (Bates) in the opening round, followed by an 8-5 win over Nadia Andrew (Springfield) and an 8-1 sweep over Evelina Anastasi (Tufts) in the Round of 16 before falling in a tight quarterfinal match up to Maya Mahunthan (Amherst) 8-4. Kendall Skulley also competed for Colby in the B draw, dropping her opening match to Beatriz Ohara de Paula Silva (Brandeis) 8-2.
In main A Singles play, Ella Wertz highlighted the draw with a gritty comeback in the Round of 64, rebounding from a set down to defeat Kyra McCandless (Tufts) 5-7, 6-2, 10-6 before facing top-seeded Sophia Yang (MIT) in the Round of 32. Ella Novion added a first-round victory for Colby by defeating Wellesley's Luna Bian in the Round of 64, while Michaela Landry battled through a tight opening match against 9-16 seed Rayna Li (MIT) 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles action, Novion and Jani paired up to deliver a dominant 8-1 win over Gordon in the Round of 64 to advance to the Round of 32, while Landry and Wertz earned a first-round bye into the Round of 32.
The Mules will look to build on their strong fall tournament results as they prepare for their upcoming schedule.
