Men’s Hockey Secures 6-3 Win Over Middlebury

Middlebury, V.T. - The Colby College Men's Ice Hockey team faced the Panthers of Middlebury College on Saturday afternoon for their second match up of the season. In a high-scoring game, Colby took the lead in the first period, and with six different goal scorers the Mules finished with a 6-3 win, their second over Middlebury. The Mules now stand 9-6-2 overall and 5-5-1 in the NESCAC, ranked third.

In the first period, the Mules out shot the Panthers 13 to nine, and in a scrum in front of the net, sophomore Colby Browne earned a penalty shot. As Browne dangled his way around the goalie taking the 1-0 lead for the Mules at 16:43, he earned his 14th goal of the season, leading in the NESCAC.

In the second, Middlebury tied the game just over three minutes into the period, but Colby took the lead once again two minutes later with a goal from junior Donovan O'Neil. The Mules found another quick goal from sophomore Massimo Gentile, assisted by Browne. Just over a minute later Colby extended their lead to 4-1 with a goal from junior Bobby Landry. The Panthers cut the Mules' lead to 4-2 at 11:24, finishing out the high-scoring second period. 

Middlebury came out strong in the third, out shooting the Mules nine to five, finding the back of the net just one minute into the period, making it a one-goal game. Sophomore Will Soloway helped Colby push ahead, taking a 5-3 lead, assisted by Tyler Crist and Riley Rosenthal. Junior Matthew MacDonald put the game away with his sixth goal of the season, giving the Mules a 6-3 win over the Panthers. Sophomore Cooper Rautenstrauch tallied 19 saves for Colby and recorded his second win over Middlebury for the season.

The Mules are back in action with another NESCAC match up at Bowdoin on Saturday at 7pm.
