New York, NY - Five Colby athletes earned spots among the nation's top 56 players and traveled to New York this weekend to compete at the highly selective CSA National Collegiate Individual Championships.
The men's team was represented by junior
Seif Ashraf '27 and freshman
Hamza Wessam '29. Both faced stiff competition in the opening round, with Ashraf and Wessam falling to opponents from Princeton and Harvard, respectively. On day two, however, both Mules responded with impressive performances. Wessam battled through a grueling five-game match against a tough Tufts opponent, ultimately securing a hard-fought victory. Ashraf followed with a composed 3–0 win in a tightly contested match, posting scores of 11–6, 15–13, and 12–10.
On the women's side,Â
Laavanya Kugan '26,
Abhisheka David '26, and
Nathalie Sim '27, represented Colby. Kugan opened her tournament against a strong Cornell opponent. After dropping the first game 11–7, she rebounded to take the second 11–6, but narrowly fell in the following two tightly contested games, 14–12 and 12–10. In her second match, Kugan faced an opponent from Drexel, trading games before ultimately falling 11–7 in the fifth. David battled a top-ranked Trinity opponent in her opening match before loosing in straight sets. In the consolation bracket, she showed resilience against a Yale opponent, pushing the match after dropping the first two games and narrowly falling 13–11 in the third. Unfortunately, Sim was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to a head injury sustained in the previous week's match against Amherst, but remained present to support her teammates throughout the weekend.
Due to an impending snowstorm, the tournament concluded prematurely, sending all players in the consolation brackets home early. Colby will return to action on its home courts next Friday when it hosts Saint Lawrence.
