Waterville, Maine. - The Colby College Men's Ice Hockey team faced the Cardinals of Wesleyan University on Friday evening. In an evenly matched game with two goals each after 60 minutes, the Mules put the game away with 0.8 seconds left to play in overtime. The Mules now stand 8-4-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the NESCAC.
In the first period, the Cardinals took an early lead, despite the Mules tallying 12 shots on goal compared to Wesleyan's nine. Sophomore
Colby Browne evened the game 1-1 with only three minutes to play in the second period, with assists from
Will Soloway and
Tyler Crist.
Just two minutes into the third period, junior
Donovan O'Neil scored his first goal of the season, assisted by
Jayden Grier and
Riley Rosenthal to give the Mules their first lead of the game. While the Cardinals out shot the Mules 11 to nine in the third period, Wesleyan tied the game with 10 minutes to play, sending the game into overtime. Colby dominated the five-minute overtime period, taking four shots against Wesleyan's two. As the clock was winding down, Browne skated the puck from his defensive zone all the way to the Wesleyan net, as he scored his 13th goal of the season, putting the game away with 0.8 seconds remaining as the Mules finished with a 3-2 win. Sophomore
Cooper Rautenstrauch recorded 32 saves to keep Colby in the game.
The Mules play again Saturday against Trinity at 3pm.
