Men's Crew

Crew finishes ahead of Bowdoin, behind Bates for Presidents Cup on challenging day

Greene, Maine- Crew teams were second ahead of Bowdoin in some very challenging conditions for Sunday's President's Cup on the Androscoggin River. It was overcast with rain showers in the 40's and a steady, strong head-crosswind. It was a tough day overall, though our men's eights beating Bowdoin in all the eights events was a positive takeaway. Bates won the President's Cup based on overall results in the point-earning events; Colby finished second; Bowdoin third.

Men's Varsity eight was rowed by- Curtis Adams-Beyea '28; Dallas Watson '28; Charlie Anderson '25; Jack Childress '26; Andy Li '28; Danny Sullivan '26; Theo Grossman '27; Cole Christensen '27; Ian Ucko '28. They finished second just over 10 seconds back of Bates, and nearly 16 seconds in front of Bowdoin. This crew had some positive takeaways from their first race in this new lineup but it wasn't enough to overcome a solid start from Bates that made it very difficult to come back against in the headwind conditions.

Women's Varsity eight of: Eunice Yi '28; Ellie Pohlig '26; Isabel Grimes '25; Zoey Honsel '28; Ainsley Bonang '25; Kate Ward '28; Shannon Murray '28; Erica O'Donnell '27; Zoe Dodge '26 was also in a changed lineup due to injuries, and this crew simply didn't have enough time together to compete with such strong crews, especially in challenging conditions. They finished third about 27 seconds back of Bowdoin, and about 37 seconds back of Bates.

Men's second Varsity eight of: Alyssa West '25; Jed Swan '28; Brendan Barrett '27; Robbie Trowbridge '28; Jackson Harrington '28; Jack Weinberg '26; Nolan Roche '28; Ian Zhou '28; Jack AbuHaidar '27 finished second only less than 5 seconds behind Bates, and a minute and ten seconds over Bowdoin. Also rowing in a new lineup they had a strong start that helped them and Bates pull away from Bowdoin, but the crew wasn't able to be as consistent as they needed to be in the second half of the race and Bates was able pull away at the end.

Women's second Varsity eight of: Tara Gorman '27; Erica O'Donnell '27; Molly Garvey '28; Ella Brochu '28; Hannah Colling '28; Megan Wiseman '28; Dede Tindall '28; Isa Jurado '27; Abby Stathis '27 finished 3rd about 24 seconds behind Bowdoin and 44 seconds behind Bates. With one of these women having to row twice in quick succession due to an injured athlete, they had a solid start to the race but couldn't hold the pace for the entire distance.

Men's third Varsity eight of: Nate Dunn '27; Charlie Pantelick '27; Josh Bradshaw '28; Sumner Groves '28; Henry Evans '28; Theo Ornstein '28; Augi Booth '28; Eliot Do '25; Bennett Jones '27 finished second only 4 seconds behind Bates, and 32 seconds ahead of Bowdoin. They got off to a great start and had a lead on the field into the second half of the race, they weren't able to hold off a furious charge from the Bates crew that was able to move ahead in the final few hundred meters.

Men's Varsity four of: Caroline Batchelder '28; Dan Steber '27; Sawyer Dillon '28; Doug DeNatale '28; Aidan Fowler '27 were second behind Bowdoin by 27 seconds, and 32 seconds ahead of Bates. This boat was racing as a new lineup with the return of two rowers from injury, they had a strong race losing to a Bowdoin crew that was racing their four top oarsmen.

Women's Varsity four of: Eunice Yi '28; Ellie Pohlig '26; Isabel Grimes '25; Isa Jurado '27; Ainsley Bonang '25 were able to secure the Mules only win of the day, earning some key points toward the President's Cup and these five women did a great job staying tough on their second trip down the race course in under an hour to steadily pull away from the other two crews. They beat the next best boat rowed by Bowdoin by about 18 seconds.

The Men's Novice four of: Curtis Adams-Beyea '28; Ian Zhou '28; Josh Bradshaw '28; Theo Ornstein '28; Nolan Roche '28 were second about 21 seconds behind Bates, and 18 seconds ahead of Bowdoin. Also racing for the second time in under an hour these guys put down a strong effort in very challenging conditions, helping earn key points over Bowdoin in the President's Cup tally.

The Women's Novice four of: Tara Gorman '27; Zoey Honsel '28; Molly Garvey '28; Kate Ward '28; Shannon Murray '28 were able to finish second ahead of Bowdoin. Another gutsy performance by these women to double up and race twice on a wet and windy day and help earn valuable points over Bowdoin for the President's Cup.

Crew looks forward to racing next for the New England Rowing Championships in Worcester, Mass. on Saturday, May 3rd.
