MEDFORD, Mass. - The Mules defeated the Jumbos 3-1 in game one of their New England Small College Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Spicer Field. Tufts earned a 6-3 victory in game two to split the NESCAC doubleheader.
GAME ONE: Colby 3, Tufts 1
Sophomore
Ashley Correll and Tufts' (17-13, 11-3 NESCAC) graduate student Sophia DiCocco were locked in a pitcher's duel for the first three innings. The Mules would be first to break through, scoring on doubles by sophomore
Caroline DeSimone and junior
Victoria Ramirez in the top of the fourth inning.
Colby (11-12, 5-3 NESCAC) then added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning with two runs after two were out with back-to-back RBI singles by junior
Emma Burnham and DeSimone.
Tufts' lone run came with one out in the bottom of the sixth off a Mule miscue.
Correll (4-4) picked up her fourth win of the season after throwing four scoreless innings while giving up five hits with one strikeout. Freshman
Sophia Meade pitched three innings in relief of Correll, allowing three hits and one unearned run to earn her fifth career save, giving her sole possession of first place in program history.
DeSimone was 2-4 with a run, a double and an RBI while Ramirez went 2-4 with a double and an RBI to lead the Mules in the program's first road victory over the Jumbos since the 1988 season.
GAME TWO: Tufts 6, Colby 3
The Mules open the scoring in game two in the top of the first inning with two runs off three. DeSimone hit a sky-high fly ball that got caught up in the wind and fell for a triple with one out. She scored on a single through the left side by junior
Carissa Cassidy. After Cassidy stole second, she then scored on a double by sophomore
Ella Wilcox.
Tufts answered quickly by scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single before scoring three times in their next turn at the plate and then adding a run off a sacrifice fly to take a 5-2 advantage after three innings of the play.
After a scoreless fourth inning by both teams, the Mules closed to within 5-3 in the fifth. Junior
Kelsey Sullivan led off with a single, was sacrificed twice to third and scored on a two-out single by DeSimone.
Tufts reinstated their three-run lead in the bottom of the fifth frame on an RBI double to centerfield to close out the scoring in game two.
DeSimone and Cassidy finished the game two with two hits for Colby while Ramirez, Wilcox, Sullivan and senior
Erika MacLeod each recorded a hit in the setback.
Kathryne Clay (2-4) suffered the loss after allowing four runs off five hits in one inning. Junior
KC DeSarno gave up two runs on five hits in five innings of work.
The Mules return to action tomorrow when they host the University of Southern Maine for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
