WATERVILLE, Maine – The Colby College softball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader to the University of Southern Maine on Sunday afternoon at the Colby Softball Field. The Mules fell 10-4 to the Huskies in the opener and 7-3 in the nightcap.
GAME ONE: Southern Maine 10, Colby 4
The University of Southern Maine (15-13) scored the game's first run with a one-out double in the first, and Colby (11-14) scored an unearned run off a fielder's choice by junior
Victoria Ramirez that resulted in a Husky miscue that allowed junior
Emma Burnham to tie the score up at 1-1.
After a scoreless second, Southern Maine scored twice in the third to lead 3-1 before Colby scored once in the home half of the third inning to trail 3-2 as sophomore
Ella Wilcox singled down the right field line for an RBI.
The Huskies seized control of the game with a four-run top of the fourth to take a 7-1Â lead.
Both teams were quiet through the fifth before Southern Maine increased its lead to 9-2 in the top of the sixth.
To start of the top of the seventh inning, Southern Maine added to their total with a solo home run over the left field fence to give them a 10-2 advantage.
Colby made a late rally scoring twice in the seventh on an RBI single from Wilcox and an RBI double from freshman
Avery Lyman, but Southern Maine ended the game with three consecutive outs for the 10-4 final.
Sophomore
Ashley Correll (4-5) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (four unearned) off eight hits with two strikeouts in three innings. Junior
KC DeSarno pitched four innings in relief of Carrell, yielding four runs (one earned) on three hits with five strikeouts.
Wilcox finished 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs for the Mules, while Burnham, sophomore
Caroline DeSimone, junior
Carissa Cassidy, Ramirez, Lyman, junior
Kathryne Clay and senior
Erika MacLeod all posted hits.
GAME TWO: Southern Maine 7, Husson 3
After a scoreless first inning, Southern Maine scored twice in the top of the second, and three times in the third and twice in the fifth to lead Colby 7-0.
DeSimone made it 7-1 with an RBI single up the middle in the fifth, and then the Mules cut the lead to 7-3 in the sixth with a two-run three-hit bottom of the sixth. Junior
Kelsey Sullivan had an RBI double to left in the sixth for the Mules, while Burnham doubled down the left field line for an RBI to close out the scoring in game two.
Freshman
Sophia Meade (2-2) took the loss after allowing seven earned runs off ten hits with three punch-outs in 4.1 innings while Clay pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Burnham, DeSimone, Cassidy, Wilcox, Lyman, Sullivan and MacLeod picked up hits for the Mules in the setback.
The Mules hit the road for a mid-week NESCAC doubleheader at Bowdoin on Tuesday beginning at 5 & 7 p.m.
