Men's Lacrosse Stifles Comeback From Maine Maritime in Comfortable Win

Waterville, Maine - No April Fools prank today, Colby Men's Lacrosse survived a late comeback against Maine Maritime Academy, remaining undefeated in non-conference matchups. The midweek game against the Mariners allowed Coach Bernhardt to rotate the squad, leading to eight players scoring their first goals of the season. The 16-13 win takes the Mules to 3-5 overall.

Colby started the game fast, jumping out to an early lead. The Mules registered 20 shots which found the back of the net 3 times. Max Proia opened the scoring less than a minute in and then found Luke Lombardo for Colby's second. Later in the half, Matthew George, Harrison Leenhouts, and Matt Stein all opened their scoring accounts for the season. The Mules took a 8-2 lead into the break after a solid half both offensive and defensively.

In an electric start to the third quarter, Colby almost doubled their goal tally but also dealt with a surprising comeback from the Mariners as both teams put six goals past each other in 15 minutes. Lombardo completed his hat-trick while Evan DeVita grabbed two back to back goals to give the Mules a 12-3 lead. Immediately after, a 4-0 run from the Mariners gave the visitors life but also seemed to be a lapse in concentration from Colby as they responded with goals from George and Tidiane Gakou. The fourth quarter was similar as Maine continued to put up a fight with five goals, but the Mules calmly kept them at bay. Stein also grabbed a hat-trick with a late goal and Zac London scored his first of the year to give Colby a comfortable win.

The Mules are back in action Saturday, April 5th, as they travel up to Middlebury, Vermont to take on the Panthers in a NESCAC conference matchup.
