Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | Aidan Simmonds

After Hot Start, Mules Go Cold in Home Opener, Fall to Conn.

Waterville, Maine - Colby's home opener against Connecticut College was nothing short of exciting. After a first half littered with goals and end-to-end action, the Mules felt the impact of the elements and went cold. They fell to the Camels, 13-9, taking their record to 0-2 overall and in NESCAC conference play.

The game started so fast that even the live stats booth couldn't keep up, as Conn. won the first faceoff and scored 9 seconds in. The next possession, a faceoff violation gave Colby the ball, leading to a solo goal from Nick Sokolosky less than 45 seconds later. The Mules continued their momentum after the next faceoff, as Justin Turley won the ball and found Bennett Goller who converted even quicker–this time only 15 seconds. The quarter continued to go back and forth as Conn. tied things up only for Colby to score 20 seconds later. This time Nick Hoy found Goller, who minutes later was on the opposite end of the buildup, swinging it to Gavin Rothenberg at the top of the box to make it 4-2. The Mules' momentum persisted, finding the back of the net yet again, less than a minute after their previous. After a turnover on the Camels, Rothenberg picked up a ground ball and fed Goller who drilled yet another solo goal. However, the barrage of goals was short-lived as Conn. drew within 1 to end the quarter, and eventually took the lead in the second. The Mules went into half trailing 5-6 after 5 goals in six minutes to start the game.

Unfortunately, Colby's hot start from the first half didn't repeat itself, even more so as the Camels increased their lead by 2. The Mules did respond well with two of their own, both finished off by Rothenberg, to end the third down 7-8. But Conn. didn't let up, scoring three more and ultimately crushing Colby's comeback. Rothenberg combined with Will Steele for Colby's eighth and Goller grabbed his fourth of the game minutes later, but the Camels held on for an energetic win.

The Mules are back in action tomorrow, March 9th, as they head down to Beverly, Massachusetts to take on non-conference opponent, Endicott College.
