Beverly, Massachusetts - In a few weeks, chaos, comprised of brackets and Cinderella stories will sweep the nation during the coveted 'March Madness', but today was a sign that the madness has come early. Heading into halftime down three goals, Colby fought their way back against #20 Endicott College, shutting them out and taking them to overtime where Bennett Goller called 'game.' The senior's walkoff snipe into the goalie's top right corner, not only gives the Mules a massive win over a nationally ranked team but also their first of the season, taking them to 1-2 overall.
Like the previous game, the first quarter was hectic. Colby opened the scoring two minutes in as Goller found Will Steele for his fifth of the season. However, Endicott responded less than a minute later, grabbing two quick goals only seven seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead, and finding a third not long after. The Mules responded through Gavin Rothenberg, who continued his scoring hot streak off an assist from Brooks Rayment. Not long after, Colby pulled another one back on a man-up possession, as Goller scored a brilliant solo goal to pull the Mules within one. But after a big run from the Gulls to end the half, Colby found themselves down 4-7.
Coming out of the break, it was comeback time. Although the deficit wasn't completely insurmountable, Endicott's defense was proving problematic and their momentum on offense to end the half carried over to start the third. Colby was outnumbered on shots but ultimately were more clinical. Goller found Rothenberg five minutes in to kickstart the comeback but not long after, Steele buried his second of the game to give the Mules life. When the fourth quarter rolled around, it was all hands on deck as Colby threw everything they had at the Gulls' defense. The Mules doubled Endicott in shots, forced turnovers during their clear attempts, and Will Heisler came up big between the sticks as they pushed for the leveler.Â
Ultimately, Luke Lombardo found Rothenberg for his second assist of the game and the latter's third goal–drawing the Mules level. In overtime, Colby suffered two turnovers off unsuccessful clear attempts but Endicott couldn't capitalize. However, when they were successful, they set up their offense which led to Bennett Goller drilling the winner. The senior switched to his left on the right side of the field and fired it across the goalkeeper's body for an inch-perfect shot.
The Mules are back in action Saturday, March 15th, as they host Amherst in a NESCAC conference matchup.Â
