Clinton, New York - Looking for their first NESCAC win of the year, the Mules faced winless Hamilton in their first of two spring break games on the road. After hanging with the Colonials until the third quarter, the Mules lost momentum while Hamilton ran away with the game. The 5-10 loss drops Colby to 1-4 overall and 0-4 in NESCAC conference play.Â
From the first face-off, the Colonials started strong and scored on their second and third possessions. The 2-0 deficit flipped the switch for the Mules and led to a quick two goals in response. Cormac O'Neill opened the scoring for Colby in the seventh minute off an assist from Gavin Rothenberg, and two minutes later, the sophomore found Will Steele for his second assist of the game. The second quarter was similar to the first, as both teams played cat and mouse with Hamilton jumping out to another lead. The Mules went down 2-4 until Rothenberg grabbed one back on a man-up possession to end the half. Bennett Goller grabbed the assist that led to Rothenberg's team-leading 12th goal of the season.
Coming out of the break, Colby continued to push for an equalizer, but yet again the Colonials stretched their lead. Another two goals put the Mules back 3-6, but they still didn't go away. With four minutes to go in the third quarter, Nick Sokolosky found Rothenberg for his second goal of the game to give Colby momentum. Minutes later, Rothenberg continued to show his versatility, assisting Goller to make it 5-6 and giving him an involvement in each of the Mules' goals. In the fourth quarter, Hamilton scored four straight to put the game out of Colby's reach.
The Mules are back in action Tuesday, March 25, as they travel down to Cambridge, Massachusetts, to take on MIT.
