CLERMONT, Fla. – Colby College defeated Westminster University (Mo.), 6-1, and fell to Lewis & Clark College, 7-5, in THE Spring Games softball action at the Legends Way Athletic Complex on Monday morning.
Game 1: Lewis & Clark 7, Colby 5
Colby (4-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in first thanks to a walk to junior
Emma Burnham who scored on a triple to right field by sophomore
Caroline DeSimone. DeSimone recorded the Mules second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore
Ella Wilcox.
Lewis & Clark College (14-0) responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.
The Mules tied the game in the top of the third with their second RBI triple of the game by Wilcox. Lewis & Clark grabbed the lead back in the fifth. The Pioneers added three key insurance runs in the sixth.
Colby managed to score two unearned runs on a two-out double to left field by
Juliana Kiley, but the Pioneers retired the next batter on a fly out to left field to end the game.
Sophomore
Ashley Correll suffered the loss after yielding seven runs (five earned) off four hits with three strikeouts in six innings. DeSimone was 2-3 with three runs, a triple, a walk and one RBI. Kiley went 1-4 with a double and two RBI. Freshman
Julia Berry added a double in two at-bats while Wilcox finished the game with one triple with two RBI in three at-bats.
Game 2: Colby 6, Westminster (Mo.) 1
Westminster (3-13) held a 1-0 lead after an RBI groundout in the first. The Mules made it a 4-1 game on back-to-back doubles by
KC DeSarno and Burnham in the second.
Colby added two insurance runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Wilcox and a passed ball.
Junior
Kathryne Clay earned the victory in the circle for the Mules after allowing one earned run on four hits with a pair of K's in four innings. FreshmanÂ
Sophia Meade tossed three scoreless innings in relief, allowing no hits with four strikeouts to earn a save.
Burnham was 2-2 with a double and two RBI. Junior
Carissa Cassidy went 2-3 with a run scored and a stolen base while DeSarno was 1-3 with a run scored, a double and two RBI. Freshman
Avery Lyman and Wilcox each had two hits apiece.
Colby will play their third of five doubleheaders in Florida on Monday. They will take on Manchester University at 10:00 a.m. and then the University of Wisconsin-Platteville at 12:15 pm.Â
